Recommended beaches
The following beaches were officially recommended from the National Institute for the Environment (INEA) in August 2012 (Source: globo.com)
Grumari, Prainha, Recreio, Barra da Tijuca, Pepino, Vidigal, Leblon, Ipanema, Arpoador, Diabo, Copacabana, Leme, Urca and Vermelha.
Classified as not recommended were the beaches: Joatinga, Barra de Guaratiba, Quebra-Mar to Pepê, Sao Conrado, Pontal de Sernambetiba, Botafogo, Flamengo. Ilhas do Governador and Paquetá

Infrastructure of the beaches in Rio de Janeiro
The safety station can be found at regular intervals on all the beaches of Rio. They are called "Posto" and are numbered sequentially. They serve as:
Basis of beach monitoring and rescue station
public toilet (for a fee)
shower facilities
Besides the Postos, there are numerous kiosks. The new kiosks are made of glass and were supposed to be better. They offer:
covered seating
Supply of cooked food
Toilets and lockers
The government also attempts to provide additional services such as:
Facilities for sport (on the picture a Gym from stainless steel)
Refreshment stations (donor of sprayed water)
Changing tables
waste bins
Great efforts are being made to clean the beaches. This is a subject to strict rules with inspections and penalties although it is not always obvious to tourists. These include inter alia :
